SEO Cost & Monthly Budgets
SEO Cost: What a Monthly Budget Should Actually Produce
My SEO and content growth package starts at $1,500 per month for a launched website with an agreed scope. The starting package combines review of available search data, two new content pages, updates to up to two existing pages, internal linking, reporting, and limited technical adjustments.
The purpose is a defined sequence of useful improvements. A recurring invoice should correspond to work you can inspect, decisions you can understand, and a record of what changed.
This package is separate from the research, content, and technical preparation already included in a new website build. The Pricing overview shows how those stages fit together.
Published Market Context
Straight North advertises SEO from $1,500 per month and states that most of its clients invest $4,000–$8,000. WebFX advertises a main starting SEO price of $3,000 per month. These are providers’ published offers, checked September 6, 2026, not a universal price for a standard quantity of SEO. Straight North, WebFX.
A larger fee may cover a larger team, more content, technical implementation, external promotion, or different reporting and commercial requirements. Establish which activities the quoted budget actually funds.
My starting package has a narrower, explicit production scope. It should not be described as delivering every activity of a larger agency at a fraction of its price.
What the Starting Package Includes
| Monthly component | Defined starting deliverable |
|---|---|
| Review and priorities | Review of available Search Console and relevant analytics data, with a plan for the agreed work |
| New content | Two new pages within the agreed research and editorial scope |
| Existing content | Updates to up to two identified pages |
| Internal links | Relevant connections associated with the content work |
| Technical adjustments | Agreed minor CMS corrections within a limited allowance of up to two hours |
| Reporting | Completed work, observations, unresolved issues, and recommended next steps |
A substantial research project or complex implementation can exceed this starting scope. If the business would benefit more from a different allocation, the deliverables are adjusted and agreed rather than replaced silently after payment.
The first review may also identify a technical blocker that deserves a separate project. Publishing new content around an unresolved critical problem is not automatically the right use of the monthly allowance.
One-Time SEO Preparation and Ongoing Work Are Different
A new website needs an initial structure, useful content, clear internal links, and technical search preparation. Those tasks form part of my complete website work.
After launch, the business gains information it did not have before: which pages receive relevant impressions, what customers ask, what content needs correction, and whether important pages encounter technical problems. Ongoing work responds to that evidence and to changes in the business.
| Situation | Sensible type of scope |
|---|---|
| Building the initial website | Research, agreed content, and technical preparation within the build |
| Diagnosing uncertain technical issues | A defined audit and, if needed, separately scoped implementation |
| Expanding useful content and improving existing pages | A monthly development plan or a specific content project |
| Promoting resources through publications | A separate placement or outreach scope |
| Keeping the software and backups maintained | A maintenance agreement |
You do not have to purchase every type of work. The selection depends on the actual site and business.
What Is Not Automatically Included
Publisher fees, advertising spend, large custom development, new languages, extensive data cleanup, original photography, and routine infrastructure maintenance are outside the starting SEO package unless explicitly included in your proposal.
The same applies to unlimited content production. Two substantial new pages should be planned around specific questions, not presented as a promise to cover any amount of research or any kind of functionality.
The content cost guide explains editorial scope, while the SEO audit guide explains diagnosis and implementation.
Does AI Search Require Another Monthly Fee?
Not automatically. Content clarity, accurate facts, internal linking, structured information, and access checks may overlap with work already being done for the site.
If the same work supports both ordinary search and an AI-search objective, it is scoped once. Additional monitoring or specialist research can be quoted where it has a defined purpose. A separate label alone is not a reason to duplicate the invoice.
The AI Search Optimization guide explains the practices and limitations. The package does not promise citations from a particular AI system.
Budget With the Business Outcome in Mind
Traffic matters when it connects to people the business can serve. A useful review distinguishes relevant inquiries from unrelated visits and sales from form submissions.
You can use a simple planning calculation to judge the size of the investment. Six months at the starting rate totals $9,000 in SEO service fees. If a newly won customer contributes $3,000 after the costs of delivering the sale, three additional customers would cover that service fee alone.
That is a hypothetical break-even calculation, not a forecast. It excludes the website build and other expenses, assumes genuinely additional customers, and says nothing about when those customers will arrive. Use your own contribution figures and attribution evidence rather than gross deal value.
Payment, Reporting, and Changes
The coming month is paid in advance. The agreement records the work period, deliverables, review process, and cancellation terms.
A useful report should show:
- Which URLs were created or updated and what changed.
- Which technical or content issues were addressed.
- What the available search and inquiry data show.
- What remains uncertain or blocked.
- Which actions are proposed next and why.
The report should not imply that every change caused the next increase or decrease in traffic. Search outcomes can have multiple causes; observation and attribution need to be kept distinct.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why pay monthly if the website was already built with SEO?
The build covers the agreed initial work. A monthly arrangement funds new development and responses to actual data. If you do not need that continuing scope, a separate content project or independent management may be more suitable.
Are backlinks included in $1,500?
Purchased publication fees and a placement campaign are not included by default. If external promotion becomes a priority, its work and expenses are agreed separately.
Can I buy one month?
The service is billed by work period. Any minimum commitment, notice, and handover arrangements must be stated in the proposal. No result should be promised simply because a particular number of months is purchased.
Do unused page allowances accumulate?
The plan should specify what happens when content cannot proceed because of missing facts or approvals. Do not assume an unlimited backlog. We agree how the work period and outstanding deliverables are handled.
Will you guarantee first-page positions?
No. The agreement covers work and reporting, not control over search engines. Ranking and traffic promises should not replace a clear description of deliverables.
Can local SEO be included?
Yes, where the actual local tasks are included in the agreed plan. They are not charged again simply because they also appear under a Local SEO heading.
