WordPress Maintenance Cost
WordPress Maintenance Cost: Know Who Handles What
My WordPress maintenance package is $250 per month for an agreed standard website. WooCommerce maintenance starts at $400 per month because changes also need to be checked against the store’s order flow.
The package covers recurring technical care. New content sections, custom features, and substantial repair work have separate scopes. Hosting and other provider bills are also separate unless a proposal explicitly says otherwise.
The value of a maintenance agreement is clarity: what is checked, who responds to findings, which changes are included, and what happens when a larger issue needs work.
Why Maintenance Prices Vary
Published plans can have different responsibilities behind similar names. WP Buffs advertises care levels at $89, $179, $239, and $359 per month. Smack Happy lists $110 per month for maintenance without hosting or support time, with a $199 setup fee, and a hosted option at $210 per month plus $299 setup. Checked September 6, 2026. WP Buffs, Smack Happy.
Those figures do not establish a standard package or average price. Compare the update process, included changes, store support, hosting, and response arrangements. The word “unlimited” also needs its exclusions: editing supplied content is different from researching and creating new content.
My Maintenance Packages
| Responsibility | WordPress: $250/month | WooCommerce: from $400/month |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled core, theme, and plugin updates | Included for the agreed site | Included for the agreed store |
| Monitoring and review of technical findings | Included within the agreed scope | Included within the agreed scope |
| Backup checks | Included | Included |
| Small client requests | Up to one hour in the month | Up to one hour in the month |
| Technical report | Included | Included |
| Standard order-flow checks after significant updates | Not applicable to a non-store site | Included |
| Hosting, domain, mail, and license charges | Separate provider costs | Separate provider costs |
| New development, original content, major recovery work | Separate quote | Separate quote |
The included request allowance describes a limit within the fixed package, not an open-ended promise. The agreement identifies the supported site, the update and backup checks, and how requests are submitted. A complex store may need a larger plan.
What a Useful Maintenance Cycle Looks Like
Begin with the known state of the site: current components, access, backup arrangements, important functions, and existing problems. An inherited website may need an assessment and corrective work before routine maintenance makes sense.
During the agreed cycle, review updates and relevant monitoring findings, perform the planned work, and check the functions affected by changes. For a store, that includes attention to the standard purchase path when significant updates affect it.
The report should distinguish what was done, what was observed, and what still needs a decision. A list of green indicators is less useful than a clear explanation that a backup needs attention or a plugin change requires a separate repair.
The server maintenance guide explains the technical responsibilities in more depth.
Separate Small Requests From New Work
A request such as changing an existing contact detail is different from building a new section. Even apparently small changes can require extra work if they affect a shared template or an integration.
| Request | How it is handled |
|---|---|
| Replace supplied text or an image in an existing supported layout | Can fit the monthly small-request allowance |
| Correct a routine setting within the agreed maintenance scope | Assessed within the planned technical work |
| Research and write a new guide | Content package or development scope |
| Add a new content type, booking workflow, or integration | Separate fixed quote |
| Repair an inherited compromise or perform extensive restoration | Separate assessment and agreed response |
I confirm additional work before proceeding. A monitoring alert is not authorization to spend an unlimited amount repairing an issue.
Monitoring and Emergency Expectations
Automatic monitoring can detect conditions outside normal working periods. That does not establish round-the-clock human support or an immediate restoration guarantee.
Before starting, agree on contact methods, availability, escalation, and what constitutes an urgent issue. Where the business requires a formal response commitment or continuous coverage, that need must be assessed explicitly rather than assumed to fit the standard package.
Backup checks also need a defined meaning. The agreement should identify what is checked routinely and whether a full restoration exercise is part of the plan or a separate task. Having a backup does not remove all recovery effort.
Payment and Leaving the Plan
Maintenance is paid in advance for the coming month. The agreement records the start date, cancellation notice, treatment of unused request allowance, and any onboarding work. Do not assume that unused time accumulates or that a partial month automatically has a particular refund rule.
If you stop my maintenance, the website remains yours. We identify the provider bills and technical responsibilities that continue, and you can authorize another person to take over. I do not assume ongoing management access after an independent handover.
For twelve months, the stated package fees are $3,000 for standard WordPress maintenance or from $4,800 for WooCommerce maintenance, excluding provider charges and separately approved work. This makes the annual commitment visible without implying a compulsory annual contract.
When You Also Need Development
A website may be technically maintained and still need new explanations, updated offers, or better content. Those are development priorities rather than automatic maintenance deliverables.
The SEO and content growth package covers a defined improvement schedule. If you choose both packages, the proposal separates their responsibilities and avoids charging twice for the same task. You do not need to buy SEO work merely to keep a maintenance arrangement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the monthly price include hosting?
No. The prices on this page are for my work. Provider charges are separate and visible in the budget. See website running costs.
Do you maintain websites built by someone else?
They can be assessed. Existing code, access, unsupported components, and unresolved problems may require preliminary work. The standard price does not assume responsibility for an unknown system without review.
Does monitoring include fixing everything it finds?
No. Findings are reviewed against the agreed scope. Routine work is handled accordingly; larger changes or recovery work receive a separate proposal.
Can I manage updates myself?
Yes, if you are taking responsibility for the process and its consequences. The important point is that ownership of updates, backups, and recovery is explicit rather than assumed.
Do you write blog posts in the care plan?
Original content creation is separate. Publishing or adjusting supplied material may fit the small-request allowance, depending on the task.
Is maintenance a condition of buying a website?
No. A completed website can be handed over independently. We document what remains to be paid, renewed, checked, and maintained.
